St. Brigid’s Church

This elegant and brilliantly designed church with a ceiling that looks like the hull of a ship was closed and abandoned in 2001 when a crack in the east wall became irreparable.

As demolition crews arrived and began smashing the antique stained-glass windows, an anonymous benefactor intervened and saved the church with a $21 million donation.

A full art conservation program ensued, including paint recovery, consolidation treatment of the wood lath and plaster ceiling, paint removal that exposed the original paint schemes, complete interior painting, decorative painting, in-painting of historic decorative painting on the sanctuary walls, and replication of the original decorative plaster. This plaster treatment and painting program was successfully carried out by John Tiedemann Inc. & HPCS USA. St. Brigid’s Church will live on in great splendor for many years to come.
