Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception

The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception was initially constructed in 1874 by Lawrence J. O’Connor and named St. Mary’s Church. Formerly under the Diocese of Albany, the Diocese of Syracuse was created in 1887.

As is typical in a building this old, the interior had become fairly run down. John Tiedemann Inc. and Troy Simmons, Liturgical Architect of MPSB Architectural Design, were thereby commissioned by the Diocese of Syracuse to design and decorate the interior of the Cathedral. The work included stabilization of the side aisle plaster walls, decorative painting throughout the cathedral; restoration of the wood ceiling, extensive stenciling, restoration of the Stations of the Cross, and refinishing of all the architectural woodwork. After this work was completed, the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception regained its old beauty and charm.
